Asphyxia is a condition of severely inadequate supply of oxygen to the body that arises from abnormal breathing. An example of asphyxia is choking.
Recognition
- Difficulty/Noisy breathing
- Rapid pulse
- High blood pressure
- Cyanosis (grey-blue tinge around lips)
- Deteriorating levels of consciousness
So what can I do about it?
- Call 999 immediately!
- Where possible remove the cause of asphyxiation (e.g: if strangulation, then remove the cause of this)
- Loosen any tight clothing
- Monitor airway and breathing
- Prepare to perform CPR if loss of consciousness
