Extra opening hours for UEFA final: What it means for safety and staffing

A vibrant football rests on a lush green field inside an empty stadium, capturing the essence of sports.

The government has confirmed an automatic two-hour extension to licensing hours for the UEFA Women’s Euro 2025 final on Sunday 27 July – with the Lionesses now one match away from taking the spotlight once again.

While this is great news for fans and venues alike, it also comes with increased risk – especially when it comes to alcohol, crowd control, and medical incidents.

Longer hours = higher intoxication = higher risk

In our experience supporting licensed venues and events, an extra two hours of trading often results in a significant spike in intoxication-related incidents, especially when fuelled by the energy of major sporting finals. The later the finish, the greater the cumulative effect of alcohol consumption — and the more complex the environment becomes for staff and responders.

Typical risks we see include:

  • Increased risk of slips, falls, and injuries
  • Greater need for safeguarding and welfare checks
  • Higher potential for conflict or aggression
  • Reduced capacity for self-care among guests
  • Medical emergencies being missed or delayed due to crowd dynamics

Preparing your venue: don’t just stay open — stay safe

If your venue plans to extend its hours for the final, we strongly recommend reviewing your medical and welfare provision, security plans, and incident reporting systems. It’s not just about compliance — it’s about keeping your patrons safe and your team supported.

We advise:

  • Briefing staff on heightened risks and response protocols
  • Increasing first aid or medical presence during the final hours
  • Establishing a clear escalation process for welfare or safeguarding concerns
  • Monitoring for signs of spiking, vulnerability, and intoxication
  • Being ready to de-escalate conflict before it escalates
