This comprehensive three‑day course provides the knowledge, practical skills and confidence to act as a workplace first aider in higher‑risk or more complex environments.

It is aligned to HSE guidance and suitable for employers who need full First Aid at Work coverage under the Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981.

What you'll learn

By the end of this course, you will be able to manage a wide range of life‑threatening and minor emergencies with a structured, legally defensible approach.

Role and responsibilities of a first aider

Understand your duties, legal considerations and how to keep yourself, colleagues and casualties safe when providing first aid.

Primary survey and incident management

Use a systematic approach to assess the scene, prioritise casualties and call for appropriate help.

Adult CPR and AED use

Perform effective CPR and use an Automated External Defibrillator on an adult casualty in cardiac arrest.

Unresponsive casualties and seizures

Place casualties in the recovery position, monitor breathing and manage seizures safely.

Choking emergencies

Recognise mild and severe choking and deliver back blows and abdominal thrusts when indicated.

Serious bleeding and shock

Control external bleeding, recognise life‑threatening blood loss and manage hypovolaemic shock while awaiting help.

Minor injuries, burns and scalds

Treat common workplace injuries such as cuts, grazes, bruises, nosebleeds and minor burns.

Secondary survey and head‑to‑toe assessment

Conduct a systematic assessment to identify hidden injuries after the immediate threat has been managed.

Bones, muscles and joint injuries

Recognise and support suspected fractures, dislocations, sprains and strains, including safe sling application.

Head, spinal and chest injuries

Recognise serious injuries and protect the spine, chest and airway while arranging urgent help.

Eye injuries and poisoning

Provide first aid for common eye injuries and sudden poisoning, including safe decontamination and when to call 999.

Anaphylaxis and auto‑injectors

Recognise anaphylaxis quickly and assist a casualty to use their prescribed adrenaline auto‑injector.

Heart attack, stroke, asthma and diabetes

Spot red‑flag symptoms of major illness and provide appropriate first aid until advanced help arrives.

Course outcomes

  • Collect a casualty history and perform a secondary survey
  • Recognise and provide first aid for suspected fractures and dislocations
  • Recognise and provide first aid for sprains and strains
  • Apply a support sling correctly
  • Apply an elevated sling correctly
  • Recognise suspected head and spinal injuries
  • Provide first aid for suspected head injuries
  • Provide first aid for suspected spinal injuries while protecting the spine
  • Provide first aid for suspected chest injuries, including rib fractures and penetrating wounds
  • Recognise the severity of burns and scalds
  • Provide first aid for burns caused by dry or wet heat
  • Provide first aid for chemical burns
  • Provide first aid for electrical burns
  • Provide first aid for eye injuries involving dust, chemicals and embedded objects
  • Recognise routes of entry for poisonous substances
  • Provide first aid for casualties with suspected sudden poisoning

  • Assist a casualty to use an adrenaline auto‑injector (training device in practice)
